Tuesday's notes

Today in class Mr. Schick went over more of the Rome powerpoint.  Here are some of the notes I took today

Three governments into one

  • the rule of the king is replaced by the rule of two consuls
  • consuls were elected by people
  • office term is one year
  • they were always Aristocrats
  • Patricians traced their descent from a famous ancestor called a pater of father
  • Consuls jobs were: dealing justice, making laws, commanding the army
  • one consul could reduce the power of the other
Challenge came from regular people
  • 5th century BCE - patrician dominance of the government was challenged by plebs (people)
  • plebs were 98% of the people
  • couldn't hold office
  • plebs were threatened with debt slavery
  • plebs had no legal rights
No Legal Rights
  • plebs were victims of discriminatory decisions in judicial
  • Rome had no written laws
  • Patricians interpreted laws to their own language
  • Plebs refused to serve in the military
  • Laws, called The Law of The Twelve Tables were written out
  • Laws on tablet were posted to public in 450 BCE
  • Tribunes (tribal leaders) were elected
SPQR - Senatus Populusque Romanum
  • designates any decree or decision made by Roman Senate and People
Peoples Affairs
  • res publica means peoples affairs
  • democracy (peoples assembly and the Tribunes)
  • Aristocracy - senate
  • Monarchy - consuls
  • not a tyranny
Ancient Rome/USA
  • originally U.S. modeled their government like Ancient Rome
  • both had 3 branches of government:
  • executive
  • legislative
  • judicial
  • both countries have a legal code
That's about all I can post for notes from today.  I'll talk to you tomorrow... cya
